Review on Blairs Inn
Anne and John Blair's whitewashed cottage pub down by the riverside is a real haven for lovers Irish hospitality and honest food. The inn is also famed for its spectacular floral displays and for the sight of trout rising in the Owenageara - which bounds the peaceful garden.
Inside, the mood is a mix of traditional Irish and French provincial, with a stone fireplace piled high with books, storm lanterns, jugs of flowers and a big table weighed down with brandies and liqueurs. Food is served lunch and evening in the bar, and the menu taps into the old traditions with corned beef on a bed of champ with cabbage and parsley sauce, Irish stew and bread-and-butter pudding with cinnamon custard,
You can also enjoy dinner in the candlelit Snug & Pantry restaurant, where the menu is fleshed out with more ambitious offerings along the lines of smoked chicken vol-au-vent in mushroom cream sauce, roast monkfish on bacon mash with oregano-scented sauce or baked fillet of sea bass with mussels and tarragon butter. To finish, try orange and lemon parfait or hot apple tart.
