Review on Lords of the Manor
Nestled amongst the rolling Cotswold countryside in the picture-postcard village of Upper Slaughter, the Lords of the Manor is steeped in history and has become a byword for elegance and refinement. The restaurant is widely regarded as one of the region's finest and was awarded three prestigious AA Rosettes in 2019.
The kitchen brings a freshness and vitality to its cooking, with a strong emphasis on seasonal ingredients. A mosaic of guinea fowl and smoked ham comes with apple purée and hazelnuts, while main courses might range from John Dory with caramelised sweetbreads, carrots, gingerbread and chicken jus to loin of Balmoral Estate venison with red cabbage, Valrhona chocolate and port jus. Blood orange marshmallow with Kalamansi parfait and chilled blood orange soup is a typically inventive dessert, and the 200-bin wine list has a excellent selection from Italy.
To celebrate summer, the Lords of the Manor offers chauffeur-driven picnics: couples can be picked up from Cheltenham or Oxford stations, then escorted to the hotel grounds for a luxury repast complete with butler service and Champagne. Expect culinary delights such as foie gras parfait or celeriac and roast bean salad.
