Review on Bradford Café de Akbar
When it opened in 1995, this crowd-pulling restaurant seated just 28 people: now it caters for up to 200. Part of the attraction is the colourfully exuberant décor, which comes complete with a mock fountain, brazier wall lights and a tented ceiling in one of the jam-packed dining rooms.
The kitchen has no truck with new wave gestures. Instead it offers traditional North Indian cookery without pretensions. Baltis brought to the table in iron pots make their presence felt forcefully alongside old favourites such as lamb samosas and chicken dhansak.
There are also a few less familiar items, including chicken liver tikka, fish pakoras and chamgidar (three different meats cooked together). Huge naan breads hang suspended from metal frames, and jugs of lassi suit the food if you don’t fancy beer or wine. See Akbar's website for other branches in the region.
