Review on The Usk Inn
Established in the 1840s to tie in with the arrival of the Brecon to Merthyr Railway, this country inn-with-rooms stands opposite what was the old station and yard. Today’s travellers, however, are more likely to be hungry and thirsty tourists exploring the Brecon Beacons or the nearby Brecon Canal.
The pub has been extended and sympathetically refurbished over the years, but the atmosphere and welcome are as genuine as ever. Light meals are served in the bar, where you can get anything from a plate of sandwiches to Caesar salad, salmon fishcakes and twice-cooked lamb shank in red wine and mint jus.
More formal meals are served in the airy, Mediterranean-style dining room. Fixed-price menus are fleshed out with plenty of blackboard specials and the choice might extend to goats’ cheese wrapped in filo pastry, loin of Caecrwn pork in mustard and cider sauce, and Middlewood venison in port and liquorice sauce with star anise and poached pear.
