Review on The Kensington Arms
Following a serious makeover, this one-time drinkers' den has transformed itself into an affable gastropub-cum-restaurant spread over two floors. Downstairs is the bar, above is a more formal dining room with clothed tables. Michelin-starred Josh Eggleton is one of the Directors of the The Kensington Arms together with Guy Newell, the former managing director of the Butcombe Brewery.
Real ales and ciders are on tap, and drinkers can soak up their chosen tipple with plates of dripping on toast, crayfish tails or chocolate brownies. The full menu majors in the English classics - mussels cooked with perry and cream, faggots with cauliflower cheese, peas and Guinness gravy, sticky toffee pudding, for example.
In addition, there are some dishes inspired by the Mediterranean, such as a warm salad of peppers, aubergines and courgettes or crab linguine with Parmesan, watercress and sourdough crumbs. A few more ambitious ideas are available upstairs - especially in the evening, when the kitchen serves up things like char-grilled quail with a ham and cheese potato cake. Desserts could run from rhubarb crumble to poached peach with Sangria syrup.
