A genuine Indian restaurant-with-rooms deep in Kent commuter land sounds unlikely, but Tamasha in Bromley is proving to be a great success. Uniformed staff are eager to greet you, and all around there are echoes of the days of the Raj with artefacts and an amazing collection of photographs depicting India’s fascinating history.

The menu is long and wide-ranging, with lots of unfamiliar dish names but helpful descriptions. Among the more unusual items, look for patrani machhi (sliced halibut marinated in mint and ginger then steamed in banana leaves), chicken kaju pista (stuffed with dried fruit and spices then cooked in a sauce of coconut paste and yoghurt), and raan jaipuri (leg of lamb marinated with dark rum, red wine and spices and garnished with browned onions, coriander and roasted almonds).

Live entertainment jazzes up proceedings on Monday and Tuesday evenings, while on Sundays there’s a special show (including a magician) plus a buffet tailored for families with children. Above the ground floor dining room is the Durbar Hall with its own bar and facilities: ideal for conferences or private celebrations.
