Review on The George Hotel & Brasserie
For hundreds of years, the George was a stopping-off point for travellers on the old Great North Road between London and York. These days, this impressively restored coaching inn not far from St Neots combines the virtues of a stylish boutique hotel with a spacious modern brasserie and wine bar.
Logos of famous Georges - Gershwin, Best, Harrison, Orwell - are everywhere, and the ground-floor dining room also boasts polished bare tables and French windows opening out onto a delightful courtyard for alfresco meals.
The cooking is modern European with lots of eclectic influences added for good measure - thus Dorset crab and saffron tart might appear alongside spicy duck spring rolls with Asian coleslaw and sweet-and-sour sauce. Main courses are equally wide-ranging, from risotto of braised rabbit, back olives and vermouth to teriyaki Old Spot pork belly with warm noodle salad and Thai dressing. For afters, try peanut butter and chocolate cheesecake with strawberry jelly. The 100-bin global wine list includes around 20 selections by the glass.
