Review on St Peter's Hall & Restaurant

A visually stunning and historically fascinating venture in a converted medieval manor house (circa 1280) complete with its own moat. Set in open countryside some four miles south of Bungay, St Peter's Hall once served as a monastery, but it's now home to St Peter's ground-breaking organic brewery, plus a pub/restaurant festooned with antique furnishings.

The food side of things is now run by Wickedly Good Food (based near Southwold), and it has strong local allegiances. Eat in the panelled Great Hall or the upstairs dining room from a menu that might kick off with local pheasant and rabbit terrine or baked field mushrooms with sun-blush tomatoes and cheese. Mains also look to the region for braised and rolled shoulder of lamb with mint and port sauce, beef & St Peter's Ale pie, homemade faggots or free-range chicken breast in chasseur sauce, with fish dishes (herb-crusted salmon, say) adding variety to the repertoire. Homespun desserts such as spotted dick, sticky toffee and date pudding round things off.

Try the full range of St Peter's auspicious brews in the Library Bar or dip into the equally fascinating wine list. Alfresco meals can be eaten outside, overlooking the gorgeous grounds.
