Vineyard, restaurant, micro-brewery, spectacular gardens, shop and farmers' market, Sir Kenneth and Carla Carlisle's country enterprise has it all. Situated close to the family seat at Wyken Hall, the whole area is a bonanza for wildlife enthusiasts, foodies and wine buffs alike: Carla describes it as a 'hotbed of defiant utopianism'.

The restaurant is housed in a strikingly restored 500-year-old timbered barn festooned with flowers, attractive art and impressively lofty raftered ceilings. It's as casual and laid-back as can be, with café-style food served right through the day and more ambitious restaurant menus on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Home produce and local ingredients loom large in the kitchen, and the repertoire is seasonal: depending on the time of year, expect starters such as pressed pheasant and rabbit terrine with fig chutney or spiced aubergines with flatbread ahead of salt beef stovies with braised Savoy cabbage and beetroot relish or sea trout with asparagus and samphire.

Desserts are fruity Anglo-European standards like peach and almond tart with Jersey cream or rose and geranium-scented pannacotta. To drink sample the fruits of the Wyken vines or Good Dog Ale from the microbrewery.
