Review on Rainbow Café
Sharon Meijland’s proud boast is that 60% of her customers are NOT vegetarian: that says a lot about the broad appeal of The Rainbow Café. It’s the only totally vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free restaurant in the city, and it must be on the right track since it scooped The Vegetarian Society’s award for ‘Best Café 2005’.
Needless to say, all ingredients are scrupulously chosen and full accredited, whether it’s free-range eggs or organic ciders. Soups are made without any added stock, cheeses are vegetarian, and ice creams are produced using soy.
The result is a menu that takes a world view, with lots of exotic flavours and ideas on show. Here you will find a tagine of flageolet beans (and much more) served on couscous or brown rice, Indonesian gado-gado salad, meatless Texas chilli and a host of salads, pasta and different breads. To finish there’s Sharon’s legendary carrot cake, as well as chocolate brownies, apple pie and treacle gingerbread. Wines are totally vegan and organic, likewise other alcoholic drinks.
