Review on Roka Canary Wharf
Situated in the heart of Canary Wharf is where you will find Rainer Becker's latest outpost for his contemporary Japanese restaurant Roka, which follows on from its successful siblings in West London and Hong Kong. Set on the first floor, the restaurant is decked out with walls and ceiling covered in natural wood intricately patterned with perforated holes, overlooked by the hustle and bustle of the open kitchen. With floor to ceiling glass windows, Roka also features a relaxing terrace for dining al fresco during the the summer months, when guests can take in the views over Canada Square and Canary Wharf.
There's a chic cocktail bar with a backdrop of shelves lined with interesting jars of shochu, a Japanese alcoholic beverage prepared by the specialist Roka team by infusing the shochu with different fruits and herbs.
The kitchen specialises in robatayaki, contemporary Japanese-style barbecue prepared on the restaurant’s central robata grill with dishes designed for sharing. Enjoy delights such as gindara no saikyo-yaki, black cod marinated in yuzu miso and homemade hajikami from the robato or a roka dish of wagyu gunkan, wagyu sushi, oscietra caviar, spring onion and fresh ginger. When it comes to desserts, you might see garasu iri tonyu to chocolate, chocolate and coconut sundae with coconut ice cream, or ichigo no kamakura, strawberries with mango sorbet and granita and green tea crumble.
The wine list offers several options by the glass and carafe, and there is an extensive sake menu divided into both hot and cold selections, and shochu is also available by the glass or carafe.
