Review on The Priest House Hotel
Affectionately known as the Priest House on the River, this idyllic modern hotel stands in 50 acres of grounds on the banks of the Trent. The site - once a series of five watermills - dates back to Domesday, and the original Norman mill tower and waterwheels are still to be seen; elsewhere, contemporary comforts and facilities are now the order of the day.
Diners in the restaurant can choose from a daily 'market menu' or a more wide-ranging seasonal carte. Typical dishes might include seared scallops with boudin blanc and cardamom lemon oil, organic Suffolk pork cooked two ways with glazed salsify and rosemary jus, and peach tarte Tatin with clotted cream ice cream. Olive oil comes from the hotel's own Villa Saletta in Italy, and many bottles on the well-chosen wine list are from personally owned vineyards.
Alternatively, opt for the casual atmosphere of the all-day Brasserie, which has the bonus of a riverside terrace for al fresco meals.
