Review on Royal Oak
Set in a pretty Dorset village famous for the awesomely endowed Cerne Giant carving, this sixteenth-century thatched pub looks as pretty as a picture. It was built from the ruins of a nearby Benedictine abbey and still oozes history â€" thanks to black panelled walls, perilously low beams, roaring fires and flagstone floors.
Local dishes such as Portland crab salad, steak and Blue Vinney cheese pie or venison sausages with mash share the billing with more ambitious ideas including pâté with gooseberry and coriander chutney, veal in a cream, mustard and whisky sauce or Caribbean duck. The main menu is bolstered by sandwiches, wraps and a slate of comforting desserts.
