Review on First Coast
‘The sort of neighbourhood restaurant we all need,’ noted Joanna Blythman in the Sunday Herald. She was referring to the MacRae brothers’ design-conscious venue in a fashionably cosmopolitan quarter of Edinburgh. Inside it looks the business, with clever lighting, maritime and coastal colour schemes and swathes of sleek woodwork.
Food is taken seriously here, and the brothers are eager to source the pick of native Scottish produce â€" especially fish. They are also keen to promote sustainable (but seldom-used) species like ling, which they might send out with a stew of oven-dried tomatoes, peas and potatoes. Elsewhere, the repertoire takes in squid and merguez sausage stir-fry with red pepper relish, spiced meatball and Halloumi skewers with bulgar wheat salad and Thai-marinated chicken salad with mango.
If you have room for dessert, try the outlandish deep-fried jam sandwich (if it’s on the menu!). Otherwise, consider Spanish almond torte with crème fraîche or chocolate and orange mouser with pistachio brittle. Early-evening menus are available from 5.00 â€" 6.30pm Monday to Friday, and there’s plenty of interesting drinking to be had from the modern wine list.
