Review on Amarone
A sexy basement just off Buchanan Street and its retail therapy hordes, Amarone is a smart, sleek good-looker, with high-level stained glass windows, arty monochrome photos on the walls, staff in red-wine coloured uniforms and cool jazz playing in the background. It's all very Milan, but this is central Glasgow.
The menu is a long haul, with pizzas and pasta seemingly the main attraction but a lot more besides if you care to delve. Antipasti could include smoked tuna and swordfish with chives and capers, while the assortment of stone-baked focaccias is also worth exploring (try the version topped with caramelised red onions, Cacciocavallo cheese and spinach).
Among the choice of fish and meat mains, it's worth steering towards the mixed seafood brodetto or char-grilled veal cutlet with lemon and rosemary-infused olive oil, while tiramisu and strawberry pannacotta top the list of desserts. Given the restaurant's name it's no surprise to find several juicy Amarones on the carefully chosen Italian regional wine list.
