Review on Amber Regent
Andy Chung can lay claim to being the godfather of Chinese food in Glasgow, having set up the first Amber restaurant on Byres Road more than 20 years ago. Since then he has built up his reputation in this grand listed premises in West Regent Street.
Amber Regent is visually plush and looks every inch ‘Scottish-Chinois’, with its plush drapes, vases, pillars and original oil paintings of Hong Kong and China by Stuart Vernon, one of the city’s current elite artists.
The long menu draws on influences from most of the familiar Chinese provinces and the kitchen makes admirable use of local Scottish produce. Seafood is a major strength, whether it’s steamed sea bass with ginger and spring onion, braised squid with garlic and wine or even seasonal crayfish. Elsewhere, expect barbecued spare ribs, Peking duck, chicken with garlic and plum sauce, Szechuan-style crispy beef with chilli, and more besides.
