Review on Mother India
Devotees are eager to point out that Mother India serves some of the most original and authentic Indian food in Glasgow â€" which is quite a claim, given that the city is being widely touted as the new curry capital of the UK.
The restaurant stands beside the Kelvingrove Hotel, a stone’s throw from the Kelvin Art Gallery, and has recently benefited from a refurb â€" although the atmosphere is as relaxed and buzzy as ever. In the basement is Mother India’s Cellar â€" an informal dining room/deli serving fascinating dishes like saffron mussels, monkfish kebabs and Sindhi chicken (layered with mashed potatoes and topped with flaky pastry).
Above is the main restaurant, where the menu is of sensible proportions and many of the dishes come as tapas-sized portions for sharing. Fascinating ideas abound: Punjabi spiced haddock, crisp dosas packed with chicken, garlic and chilli, aubergine fritters, slow-cooked lamb shank with bitter melon, and much more besides.
Mother India is now licensed, although you can still BYO beer and wine (there’s a nominal corkage charge); otherwise stay with palate-cooling lassi. On your way out, don’t forget to help yourself to a drumstick lolly!
