Review on Red Onion

There aren’t too many chefs who can boast that they have cooked for Tina Turner, Bryan Adams and the Bee Gees, but John Quigley did just that before deciding to get out of celeb-land and move back to his home patch in Glasgow. The end result is Red Onion â€" a casual, city-centre venue serving eclectic modern food right through the day.

For breakfast, there are croissants, rounds of toast and rolls packed with Ayrshire bacon, eggs or sausage. Later, the homely Scots influence shows in Finnan haddie with mash, poached egg and Mornay sauce, organic beef burgers and caramel shortcake ‘as you like it’, but Quigley’s globetrotting background dictates just about everything else.

He’s happy to line up smoked peppered mackerel hash with beetroot salsa alongside duck and ginger spring rolls with sweet chilli vinegar dip, offer bang-bang chicken salad with coriander and satay dressing as well as the classic Caesar version, and keep the punters on their toes with the likes of navarin of lamb, Moroccan chicken tagine and sea bass fillet with stir-fried pad Thai noodles. Finally, for pure indulgence, there’s affogato â€" vanilla ice cream with a shot of espresso and chocolate sauce.
