Review on Caravaggio
Opened in style by the late, great Luciano Pavarotti, Caravaggio occupies an extravagantly redesigned former bank on Leadenhall Street, close to Lloyd’s. The ornate high ceiling and Art Deco light fittings remain, but the main focus is now on the long, marble-topped bar and mezzanine gallery of tables running around the room.
The menu mixes classic and modern Italian dishes. Among antipasti, look for mature Parma ham with Mozzarella and salsify or carpaccio with basil pesto, ceps and shaved Parmesan. Pasta is made on the premises and the list of main courses runs from sauté John Dory with cannellini beans to roast fillet and belly of pork with a melon-infused sauce. Steak lovers could opt for a fillet served with aubergines and Gorgonzola, while desserts have featured ginger and pear ‘mille foglie’. The wine list is an all-Italian affair, with City prices and a good showing of half-bottles for lunchers.
