Review on The Inn at Whitewell
Old-world style with all the trimmings is what visitors can expect when they arrive at this gentrified medieval inn tucked away in the Forest of Bowland. It's a fine-looking building complete with lots of old stonework, antique furniture, rambling plants and landscaped grounds overlooking the River Hodder.
Nowadays it is also boasts a vast art collection and operates a wine business, as well pleasing the punters with several bars and a more formal riverside dining room for evening meals. Local produce shows up well in dishes such as grilled Bury black pudding with grain mustard mash and homemade baked beans, roast loin of Bowland lamb with minted pease pudding and breast of Goosnargh chicken with homemade sausage, pistachios and parsnip purée.
Puddings look to the nursery for inspiration, and there are some fine British farmhouse cheeses, too. Given that the owners are also vintners, it's no surprise that the global wine list is an impressive slate running to more than 150 bins with ample selections by the glass. Visitors can also buy bottles from the shop to take home.
