Review on Bel & the Dragon
One of the oldest licensed premises in England, Bel & the Dragon in Cookham is now part of a little group of country pub restaurants with branches in Windsor, Reading, Churt, Kingsclere and Odiham. It stands in the middle of town, opposite the Stanley Spencer Gallery and close to the River Thames Path.
Inside, it's an evocative mix of ancient and modern with low beamed ceilings, original wattle-and-daub and historic fireplaces blending with pine furnishings and contemporary fittings. The pub also boasts a manicured secret garden and an open terrace for al fresco meals.
The lengthy menu is a thoroughly modern assortment of eclectic pub/brasserie dishes that might include tempura squid on sticky coconut rice with mango salsa, Cajun-spiced aubergines, and slow-roast belly pork on white bean cassoulet with caramelised apples and redcurrant jus.
The pub's name isn't a misprint: it refers to one of the books of 'The Apocrypha' - namely 'Bel and the Dragon'. Learn more about it by perusing the series of illustrations that adorn the bar.
