Review on Rules
Established in 1798 and â€" reputedly â€" London’s oldest surviving restaurant, Rules flies the flag for British food in a remarkably evocative dining room that is both lively yet comfortably familiar.
As ever, game is a feature and the choice of specials depends on the shoot: don’t miss the ‘famous grouse’. Visitors come here to soak up the atmosphere and tuck into man-sized helpings of steak and kidney pie with mash, roast rack of Devon lamb with peas and asparagus, and rib of beef on the bone with Yorkshire pud.
These days, the kitchen also casts its net beyond these shores for foie gras terrine with smoked chicken and quince jelly, and grilled wild sea bass with pearl barley and summer herb risotto, but it’s back home for Golden Syrup sponge, lemon posset and Queen of Puddings. House wines are served by the glass, jug or bottle, while the full list majors in vintages from Burgundy and the Rhone Valley.
