Review on Bear Hotel
The Bear is a venerable beast that can trace its ancestry back to 1432. That said, most of this renowned and exceedingly popular coaching inn dates from Georgian times and there are echoes of the past everywhere.
On the food front, the place has two strings to its bow, although all-comers are treated with friendliness and good humour. In the traditional bar, you can tuck into the likes of Caesar salad with anchovies and quails’ eggs, Thai prawn cakes and braised hock of Welsh lamb.
Things get more serious in the romantically intimate dining room. Take your time here to enjoy more elaborate cooking â€" although the kitchen’s heart is still in Wales. Begin with fillet of home-smoked salmon with asparagus mousse, crème fraîche and potato pancake, move on to loin of local venison, fillet of beef with steamed oxtail suet pudding, horseradish potato purée, thyme and ale sauce or tournedos of monkfish dusted with Chinese five-spice. Bread-and-butter pudding is the house speciality or you could finish with poached pear and lemon délice.
