Review on The Dove Dargate
Call it a pub or a restaurant in fact it is simply The Dove and it's a splendidly rustic, ivy-clad Kentish hostelry just off the A229 at Dargate, a pretty village between Faversham and Whitstable. It has recently been given a new lease of life by its current owners, Chef William Shenow-Brady and Manager Sophie Webb, who previously worked together at one of Kent’s top fine dining restaurant before setting up on their own.
Now decked out in pale colours with splashes of blue, it has a light and airy feel with chunky tables set on bare wood flooring. The Dove still plays its part as a local watering hole, but the food is a big attraction and in fine weather, there's a wonderful garden with glorious views that is popular for dining al fresco.
The kitchen draws on local supplies for a menu that might kick off with a starter of crab cake with a chilli and lime mayonnaise or ham hock terrine served with beetroot chutney. Main courses take in a rack of Kentish lamb with potato Dauphinoise in a redcurrant and rosemary jus or from the sea whole Dover sole with new potatoes in a caper butter sauce. When it comes to desserts who could resist such delights as dark chocolate and caramel torte with clotted cream or steamed plum sponge pudding with fresh egg custard.
There's a thoughtfully chosen wine list to complement the food as well as premium beers, ales and spirits.
