Review on The County
Overlooking an award-winning village green some 4 miles north of Darlington, this cream-painted, nineteenth-century hostelry is making quite a name for itself in the area. Inside, it has been given a contemporary makeover, with wood floors and open-plan, minimalist décor. Menus â€" listed on blackboards â€" follow suit, with a mixed bag of modern brasserie dishes and posh pub nosh.
Crab and prawn risotto with lobster sauce vies for attention with eggs Benedict, while main courses cover a lot of territory from confit of shoulder of lamb with Mediterranean vegetable and mint couscous topped with cucumber raita to home-cured seared salmon with asparagus tips, and hollandaise sauce. Also look for the pub’s home-smoked spare ribs (without the bones) served with barbecue sauce and chips, as well as desserts such as chocolate torte with Grand Marnier crème anglaise and ice cream.
Real ale is taken seriously here, with several fine names on the handpumps, and wine buffs have plenty of choice when it comes to choosing a tipple from the short, well-assembled list.
