Review on Great Fosters, The Tudor Room

The Great Fosters hotel, a magnificent Grade One listed building in Egham, Surrey have launched two new restaurants, The Tudor Room and The Estate Grill. Located in the heart of Windsor Forest, Great Fosters was built as a royal hunting lodge in 1550 and is etched with history. The stately house is surrounded on three sides by a moat and it nestles amid fifty acres of stunning landscaped grounds and parkland; the interior is equally stunning with its exquisite original tapestries, carved panelling and mullioned windows.

Guests can relax with pre-dinner drinks in the cocktail bar overlooking the Japanese bridge or sit out on the terrace (weather permitting), before proceeding to the sumptuous Tudor Room restaurant with elegant silk lined walls and a stunning seventeenth century tapestry taking centre stage. The restaurant was delighted to pick up a prestigious Michelin star in the 2020 edition of the Guide.

Head Chef of The Tudor Room is Tony Parkin, whose CV includes The West House in Ashford, private chef to Lord and lady Bamford and two-Michelin starred Kommendaten in Copenhagen. The kitchen showcases a series of tasting menus for The Tudor Room bringing a touch of class and invention to the dishes, and the cooking is shot through with intriguing ideas and a loyalty to the seasons. Following Chef's amuse bouche, open your account with cannelloni of scallop and lobster, sustainable caviar, parsnip and vanilla, shellfish bisque, followed by a main course of pot roasted duck leg, potato galette, celeriac cream, bok choi, honey and five spice glaze or cod fillet marinated in sea salt and slowly cooked in clarified butter, brandade, lemon, brioche and saffron. To close the show there's artfully displayed desserts in the shape of Styrian pumpkin seed soufflé paired with dark chocolate ice cream and peach schnapps flambé or Vacherin, quince, celery, walnut butter and digestive. Fabulous clarets from the glory years are just one of the joys to be found on the prestigious wine list.

Alternative dining is available in The Estate Grill, a contemporary restaurant offering a simpler style of cooking focussed on first-class local ingredients, some of which will be sourced from their own kitchen garden, and foraged by Shane. The restaurant will also showcase an ever changing display of artwork from talented contemporary British artists.
