Review on Gilbey's
Gilbey's is auspiciously sandwiched between Eton College and Windsor Castle, close to the River Thames, a wine bar-cum-bistro run along similar lines to its cousin in Old Amersham, Buckinghamshire.
Two-course fixed-price lunches attract the crowds, who take advantage of the courtyard garden in fine weather. Otherwise, the kitchen delivers regularly changing menus that might include â€" perhaps â€" chicken and pistachio terrine with date chutney, seared scallops with crab and rocket risotto, pork and chive sausages with braised pak choi, potato cake and red wine sauce, plus desserts like roasted pear brĂ»lĂ©e.
The Gilbey family are also wine merchants and many of the bottles on their list are imported directly from France. They also own Pheasants Ridge Vineyard in the Hambleden Valley between Henley on Thames and Marlow: look for the Bacchus Dry â€" which is said to be England’s answer to Sancerre.
