Review on The Eagle
Widely regarded as the mother of all gastropubs, the Eagle is still delivering the goods to an appreciative local crowd. The setting, a single, bare-boarded room near the old Guardian offices, still strikes first-timers as chaotic - nothing fits, nothing is co-ordinated, but the whole enterprise zings with life. There’s no distinction between where you eat and where you drink.
Food is listed on blackboards above the bar. It’s an ever-changing slate with hearty modern overtones and some Spanish and Italian accents added on. Bife ana (a marinated steak sandwich) is a fixture, likewise pasties de nata (Portuguese custard tarts); elsewhere you might stumble upon courgette and saffron risotto, roast chicken with preserved lemons, potatoes and mustard leaves, and â€" to finish â€" some fine English cheese with rhubarb jam and toast.
