Review on Chequers Inn
Originally four eighteenth-century cottages, the Chequers Inn is now an immaculately maintained pub/restaurant-with-rooms below the steeply wooded Froggatt Edge. No wonder it’s favourite with walkers and tourists exploring the Peak District.
There are still reminders of the past in the equine mounting block outside the pub and the Welsh dressers and settles in the bar; there’s even a ‘secret’ woodland garden at the back. By contrast, the kitchen makes a giant leap forward into the twenty-first century, and serves up contemporary dishes with emphatic restaurant overtones.
Among the starters you might see smoked duck with caramelised kumquats and redcurrant dressing as well as moules marinière, while main courses could encompass anything from traditional pub grub(salmon and crab fishcakes, sausages on buttered mash) to saddle of rabbit with creamed leeks and red wine jus or red mullet with ratatouille, tomato and basil sauce. Desserts tend to be local favourites like Bakewell pudding, and at lunchtime you can also get assorted sandwiches, wholesome pies and hearty casseroles. Sunday lunch runs right through the day.
