Review on The Kings Restaurant, Maitlandfield House
Delightful views across the grounds to the magnificently Gothic St Mary’s church are a feature of this comfortably luxurious hotel on the outskirts of Haddington.
Guests can eat in the quiet elegance of The Kings Restaurant, where the menu is a surprising blend of modern Scottish and Portuguese dishes. House specialities include marinated beef espetada served on a skewer with polenta chips, grilled sardines, and honey-roast pork belly with chorizo and balsamic onions. There are also ‘crowd pleasers’ like battered haddock and chips, local venison sausages on creamed potatoes with onion gravy and confit of duck.
Alternatively, choose the Bar Bistro, which has a varied assortment of dishes ranging from light snacks and gourmet sandwiches to homemade burgers and chicken piri-piri. Real ales are on tap, the wine list is a promising slate and it’s worth sampling a dram or two of Glenkinchie malt whisky, distilled only four miles from the hotel.
