Review on The Gregory
The fortunes of this Lincolnshire roadside pub have changed a great deal since the nineteenth century, when it was a watering hole for workers on the nearby Gregory family's estate. Back then, the pub had a six-day licence and was also a delivery point for coal from the local canal boats. These days, however,' the only black stuff on offer is Guinness'.
Following a makeover in 2007, the pub dropped the suffix 'Arms' from its name and the menu has been given a facelift too. Lunchtime punters can still tuck into cottage pie, beer-battered haddock and chips or char-grilled ribeye steak, but the kitchen also pleases evening visitors with cured meat platters, warm salad of wood piegon with beetroot and pickled walnuts, and pan-fried fillet of grey mullet with potato gnocchi, piquillo pepper, mussels and salsa verde.
There's also a decent selection of desserts ranging from warm chocolate pudding with maple and walnut ice cream to prune and almond tart - plus Lincolnshire Poacher cheese for those wanting something savoury. Drinkers have a choice of real ales and there are plenty of wines by the glass on the creditable list.
