Review on The Star Inn
If ever a pub called The Star deserved the name it’s this superb thatched cottage inn, The Star at Harome, not far from Helmsley. Andrew Pern has transformed the bare bones of this fourteenth-century longhouse into a remarkable hostelry that bridges the gap between bucolic watering hole and fine dining restaurant without offending anyone.
In essence, the Star is the best kind of country inn serving top-notch food without an ounce of pretence or pomposity. Lunch menus change weekly, supper every night and the carte is bolstered by blackboard specials. At the heart of Andrew Pern’s enterprise is a real love of Yorkshire produce in all its forms. He’s happy to serve up bowls of bubble ‘n’ squeak soup, posh ploughman’s, duck sausages with curly kale and home-baked beans, not to mention plates of forced Yorkshire rhubarb to finish.
But there’s much more besides, and the sheer quality shines through in dishes like pressed terrine of local oxtail with a little Yorkshire pudding and thin onion ‘soup' or wild turbot fillet with Yorkshire Blue rarebit and a salad of seared celery with Waldorf vinaigrette. Desserts stay true to the region and the kitchen has fun with local cheeses â€" serving Byland Blue with poached pear and offering apple crumble with Hawes Wensleydale.
Beer drinkers can enjoy tip-top real ales and the Star is a dream venue for wine buffs. The list is sprinkled with fine vintages from around the globe, France figures strongly and the choice by the glass simply begs to be explored. Across the road from the Star is the Corner Shop â€" a cracking deli packed with local produce and stuff from the Perns’ kitchen. True to its name, the restaurant picked up a well deserved Michelin star in the 2015 edition of the Guide.
