Review on Hotel du Vin & Bistro
Part of a neat terrace of Yorkshire-stone buildings overlooking the green open spaces of The Stray, the Harrogate branch of the Hotel du Vin group is in tune with the gentrified spirit of the town. Its interior is defined by a hunting theme, with apt motifs on the animal print cushions, papier-mâché beast heads and table lights graced with game bird feathers.
The seasonal bistro menu follows the now-familiar HDV formula. On the one hand there's a vigorous assortment of modern European dishes such as seared pigeon with roasted pine nuts, pan-fried turbot with cauliflower and chorizo risotto, and char-grilled calf's liver with free-range bacon and mash. On the other, there are 'Simple Classics' like Morecambe Bay potted shrimps and ribeye steak with frites and béarnaise sauce.
Desserts could include honey-roated figs with goats' cheese ice cream or summer pudding with clotted cream, while the wine list is an impressive, eclectic slate of more than 600 bins ranging from great vintages to youthful contenders.
