Review on Old Black Lion
Close to the site of the Lion Gate (one of the original entrances to the medieval walled town of Hay on Wye), this redoubtable inn is a historical gem, with its roots dating back to the fourteenth century - although it didn't become licensed until three centuries later.
Local and organic produce figures on the menu in the plum-coloured dining room, where you might be treated to the likes of oven-baked fresh crab topped with Caerphilly cheese, Gressingham duck breast on parsnip purée with pink peppercorn sauce, and suprême of guinea fowl with wild mushrooms and Madeira sauce.
Otherwise, head for the totally traditional, oak-timbered bar, where excellent draught ales include the Old Black Lion house brew, and food runs from steak and kidney pie to Moroccan lamb with couscous or peppered venison casserole.
