Review on Aqua Restaurant
Occupying the old Water Club on Howth Pier, this aptly named restaurant is light, airy and contemporary, with classic decor and the bonus of panoramic views across the Sound to the island of Ireland's Eye. Monochrome photographs and high-backed chairs set the tone in the dining area, while the old snooker room has been transformed into a fashionable bar.
Customers can watch chefs at work in the glass-walled kitchen, where local seafood receives plenty of attention. A few oriental influences creep in, although the main thrust of the menu is modern European. Maki sushi and lump crab spring rolls compete with the likes of oven-roast quail with blueberry stuffing or duck foie gras 'saucisson' with cep dressing and toasted brioche.
Fish also shows up well in main courses of John Dory with tempura of vegetables, lemon and vanilla oil or seared scallops with fennel and bell pepper stew, while meat fans might be drawn to saddle of venison with roast parsnip, gin and juniper sauce. Desserts are Euro-classics like chocolate fondant with Grand Marnier ice cream, while the wine list casts its net worldwide for quality bottles.
