Review on Culloden House Hotel
Bonnie Prince Charlie used this handsome Palladian mansion as his lodgings and HQ prior to the fateful Battle of Culloden. These days, the hotel has a more peaceful demeanour, with 40 acres of lawns, gardens and parkland contributing to the mood of peace and tranquillity.
Inside, pride of place goes to the awesome drawing room, which is festooned with fine antiques. Cast your eyes upwards and you’ll see its crowning glory â€" a 24-foot ceiling elaborately overlaid with intricate Adam plasterwork.
One glance at the menu will tell you that the kitchen is proud of its Scottish roots. A first course involving a tartare of sea trout and smoked salmon with marinated cucumber, lemon and pepper oil might be followed by haggis, neeps and tatties (fashionably re-cast as a timbale). Moving on, you might notice medallions of beef fillet coated with grain-mustard cream sauce and topped with shallots, chestnuts and bacon lardons, while desserts return to the flag-waving world of Athol Brose (a traditional confection of honey, cream sand whisky sprinkled with toasted caramel).
