Review on The Royal Oak
'Simply outstanding,' trumpeted one Mobile Food Guide user after discovering this re-born pub in a charming village eight miles from Chester. The 100-year-old Royal Oak has undergone some serious refurbishment of late and now struts its stuff as a brand new venue.
The fine old timbered frontage gives way to elegant, expansive lounge areas and an amazing glass-covered courtyard for all-year al fresco dining. The place has already picked up a clutch of local and regional awards since re-opening and is fast gaining a reputation for its creative use of North Country and Welsh border produce.
Appetisers might include crispy salt and pepper squid, egg noodle salad and spicy Thai dressing or homemade Goosnargh corn fed chicken liver pate, tomato and apple chutney served with granary bread. Main courses take in posh fish and chips, battered crispy fresh haddock and fresh salmon with thick cut Cheshire chips, marrowfat mushy peas, homemade tartar sauce and lemon wedge or prime Herefordshire char grilled 10oz rib-eye beef steak with Dauphinoise potatoes, garlic green beans and stilton shallot butter. To finish there's a choice of homemade puddings which could include Willington farm apple and rhubarb with shortbread crumble and vanilla ice-cream or a seriously sticky date pudding, toffee sauce and banana ice-cream.
