Review on North London Tavern
Once a prestigious railway hotel, the North London Tavern has easily made the leap to modern-day gastropub. It still sports a capacious bar complete with wood panelling, lofty ceilings and etched glass, while the vast dining room at the back is fitted out in similar style (church seats, a marble fireplace, glass chandeliers and so on).
At lunchtime, you can get full English breakfasts, pub standards (ploughman's, lamb burgers, fish and chips) plus a few more substantial items like roast chicken breast with haggis stuffing and braised barley. Evening menus are much ambitious, kicking off with - perhaps - chicken liver and saffron risotto or grilled red mullet with tapenade and beurre blanc, ahead of bouillabaisse, slow-roast belly pork with Puy lentils and salsa verde or venison, red wine and juniper stew with kale and parsnip purée. Desserts are mostly homespun favourites such as steamed Victoria plum pudding or rhubarb fool, and the food is backed by an impressive choice of wines.
