Review on Moran's Oyster Cottage
‘There is no better Oyster than one eats in Moran’s Bar’ - so begins a verse inscribed on the wall of this world-renowned venue. It was founded by the Moran family more than 250 years ago and " seven generations down the line " it’s still in the business of serving the best local bivalves and other seafood with consummate aplomb: you can even have your oysters opened by a world champion shucker!
The great and the good, famous names and tourists come here in their droves: over the years, Moran’s has played host to rock stars, film celebs, models, even the Emperor and Empress of Japan. They adore the setting (an idyllic thatched cottage on an inlet by Galway Bay) and they relish the sheer unadorned freshness of the food.
In addition to oysters from the local beds, the kitchen serves up plates of smoked wild salmon, bowls of steamed mussels with hunks of home-baked bread, dressed crab and lobsters with garlic butter. There are also a couple of non-fish alternatives (vegetable soup, ham salad) plus a few homely sweets like apple pie. To drink? Guinness, of course!
