Review on Cahernane House Hotel, The Herbert Restaurant
Built in the 1870s as a private retreat for the Herbert family (aka the Earls of Pembroke), this fine Victorian mansion is now a luxury hotel approached via its own private avenue (a 'tunnel of greenery') which cuts a swathe through acres of grounds on the edge of Killarney National Park.
Formal evening meals are served in the elegantly appointed Herbert Restaurant. The kitchen works to a broadly European repertoire, offering the likes of grilled fillet of turbot with roast crab cakes, tomato and cumin sauce, seared duck breast with sweet potato purée, caramelised pear and veal jus or char-grilled medallions of beef with peppered foie gras. Start with basil-scented tian of crab and apple and conclude with - perhaps - flourless orange cake and pineapple candy or white and dark chocolate mousse. Light lunches are served in the Cellar Bar.
