Review on The Spaniard Inn
Famous for its nightly live music sessions, this atmospheric old pub is perched high above Kinsale, with great views of the town as a bonus. It also has a strong culinary reputation, and the kitchen makes the most of local supplies - especially seafood.
Food is available in the bar right through the year, and the restaurant is also open during the season to cope with the crowds. Ancient wooden beams and maritime artefacts set the tone - in fact you might think you were eating on board an old clipper ship.
Scallops in puff pastry with beurre blanc, grilled monkfish with chorizo potatoes and pan-fried sea bass with Mediterranean vegetables, pesto and truffle oil are typical of the kitchen's output, while meat fans might be drawn to rabbit and foie gras terrine, confit of duck or braised lamb shank. To finish, try Baileys tiramisu or warm apple tart. 'Early bird' menus are available until 7.00pm and the wine list has a useful spread of bottles - especially from Europe.
