Review on The Conrad Hotel Dublin, Alex Restaurant
In a prime spot opposite the National Concert Hall (just round the corner from St Stephen's Green), this five-star contemporary hotel is a great boon for business people and tourists alike. Thanks to extensive refurbishment and ongoing improvements, it has re-invented itself to good effect of late.
The stylish Alex restaurant specialises in seafood and it creates a good impression with its bright open-plan look, Elizabeth Cope paintings and Zen-like table arrangements signifying sea, stone and fire. The kitchen works to an exciting modern menu that might begin with calderrada (Portuguese-style fish soup with star anise and saffron), oysters or an upmarket Dublin Bay prawn cocktail.
Main courses move into the realms of brown shrimp risotto, pan-fried zander with new season's broad beans, plum tomato and wild lime salsa or John Dory with baby leeks, crushed purple potatoes, parsley and white balsamic dressing. Meat eaters are offered ham hock terrine with mulled plums, fillet steak and confit of pork with Bramley apple jus, black pudding mash and spring greens, while desserts have featured Baileys crème brûlée and steamed upside-down fruit pudding.
