Review on Ely Wine Bar
A stellar list of more than 500 bottles from around the globe has earned the Ely an enviable reputation as the top wine purveyor in Dublin. Those who love the juice of the grape will find a remarkable collection of brilliant vintages, rare discoveries and affordable treats – with the bonus of a staggering 90 available by the glass (thanks to a 'verre du vin' preservation system).
The owners also care about food, and their ethos is to buy all their produce from top Irish sources. Their meat is procured through an organic family farm in the Burren, while seafood, cheeses and other staples are also out of the top drawer. The result is a colourful, worldwide menu that might take in a salad of home-cured duck with poached pear and pickled ginger, monkfish with Thai red curry sauce or asparagus, spring onion and pea risotto with salsa verde. Traditional favourites like organic bangers and mash, burgers and Irish stew are also bestsellers.
This food and wine bonanza takes place in a renovated Georgian townhouse just off St Stephen's Green in the historic heart of the city. A second branch, Ely CHQ, is in a nineteenth-century listed building on Custom House Quay; a third, Ely HQ, recently opened on Hanover Quay, Docklands, Dublin.
