Review on Brasserie Prince by Alain Roux
Formerly Hadrian's restaurant, it is now home to Brasserie Prince by Alain Roux set in the ultra-swish Rocco Forte Balmoral Hotel, a five-star property in the heart of the city of Edinburgh. The restaurant is a collaboration between chef patron Alain Roux of the legendary The Waterside Inn in Bray, holder of three prestigious Michelin stars and his father Michel Roux Snr, OBE, illustrious chef and restaurateur.
The restaurant has its own entrance on Princes Street and the interiors have been given a makeover by critically acclaimed Martin Brudnizki Design Studio and Olga Polizzi, Rocco Forte Hotels' Director of Building & Design and sister to Sir Rocco Forte. Featuring a palette of blue, green hues and pink accents to complement the lacquered and timber panelled walls, antique mirrors and chandeliers emulate the ambience and glamour of Parisian brasseries. Sip pre-dinner drinks in the cosy library by the fire or perch on the luxurious brown leather bar stools and enjoy cocktails at the long marble bar.
Combining the abundance of impeccable Scottish produce with classic French cooking, diners can look forward to starters like breaded frogs' legs with garlic and parsley or Grandpa Benoît Roux's country pâté with sourdough bread. Main courses usher in sautéed veal kidney flambé with cognac, button mushrooms and potato grenailles or from the sea Lemon sole meunière served on the bone with ratatouille and French beans. Desserts stay close to home witness crème caramel with langue de chat biscuits or rum baba bouchon with Chantilly cream.
