Review on Junior Poon
Opened in 1992, Junior Poon occupies a majestic Grade II-listed Georgian building on Hill Road, renowned as one of the first streets in the world to be lit by oil lamps: there is still one outside the restaurant!
The kitchen specialises in Peking and Szechuan cuisine with a smattering of Cantonese specialities and 'teppan' dishes served on sizzling hot plates. Typical offerings might include crispy lamb with spiced garlic sauce, baked lobster with black bean sauce, deep-fried crispy beef with chilli and Singapore noodles.
In the vaulted cellar is Junior Poon Wine Bar, a cosy spot with a warm Mediterranean feel, plush sofas and intimate alcoves. The 60-bin wine list includes some 15 by the glass and to go with your drink there's a short menu of light snacks along the lines of bang-bang chicken with peanut dip, barbecued spare ribs, butterfly king prawns and even chips with peppercorn salt and chilli.
