Review on Renvyle House Hotel, Rusheenduff Restaurant
Opened in 1883 and ranked as one of the most venerable country hotels in Ireland, Renvyle House has played host to numerous literary and political figures over the years: the poet W.B.Yeats enjoyed his honeymoon here and other auspicious guests have included Augustus John and Winston Churchill.
The hotel is in the midst of Connemara's most rugged and stunning countryside close to the Atlantic coast, but it cossets its guests with turf fires, cosy lounges and a softly lit dining room. Irish beef, Connemara lamb and local seafood figure prominently on the menu, which promises vibrant contemporary dishes along the lines of tian of West Coast crabmeat with spring onions, apples and sesame crisps, ahead of pan-roast Renvyle scallops with butternut squash risotto and mango salsa or grilled sirloin of beef with red onion marmalade and béarnaise sauce. To finish, indulge with poached pears in Sauternes fruit compote and Champagne sorbet or enjoy the traditional delights of bread and butter pudding.
