Review on Old Pines
A distinctive log cabin restaurant-with-rooms surrounded by evergreen conifers in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Old Pines is also a cosy retreat increasingly dedicated to organic food. The kitchen garden is almost up-and-running and the owners draw on an impressive array of local produce for their four-course dinner menus.
To start, you might find Shetland crab and Parmesan soufflé with hollandaise sauce or a salad of seared scallops with Argyll smoked ham and mustard vinaigrette. A bowl of prawn bisque could precede seared fillets of John Dory with fresh fettucine and sauce vierge or roast loin of Great Glen venison with juniper and red wine jus. To finish, choose between raspberry parfait with Cassis compote and Scottish cheeses with homemade oatcakes and thyme shortbread.
