Review on Old Quay House

Originally a seaman's mission, this Victorian house by the quay is now a twenty-first century boutique hotel with glorious views of the Fowey estuary from many of its rooms and sun terrace.

The interior has been stylishly fitted out with an eclectic assortment of furnishings and ornaments, and the enigmatically titled Q Restaurant overlooking the water is fast making a name for itself.

Local fish is one of the main contenders on the menu, and the kitchen makes inventive use of the catch: red mullet is soused and served as a warm salad, scallops might come with leek purée, cauliflower fritters and saffron cream, while less familiar species could include megrim and ling (served with butter beans, Savoy cabbage and fennel).

Meat eaters might go for rillettes of Gloucester Old Spot pork or braised shoulder of local mutton with a flageolet bean cassoulet and sautéed spinach, while desserts are pleasing offerings like bitter chocolate tart with cherry ice cream. Weekend brunch is worth knowing about, and the wine list is suitably eclectic.
