Review on Bistro One
Consistent, great value and a real asset to the area – no wonder Mark Shannon's neighbourhood venue has lots of friends. The upstairs room is pure bistro, with wine racks, ceiling fans and gingham cloths on close-packed square tables; a large counter adds to the feel and there are views over the leafy enclaves of Foxrock gardens from the windows. Good-value bistro-style dishes from around the globe make up the bulk of the appetising menu.
The 'house salad' of pancetta, rocket and pine nuts is a fixture, along with fish and chips with minted mushy peas. Otherwise, it's a world tour, taking in Japanese-style deep-fried monkfish with chilli and coriander, Tuscan porcini risotto with white truffle oil, Thai fish curry and roast crispy duck with orange, tarragon stuffing and baby pear. To finish, there might be Pavlova with crème fraîche and berry sauce or Irish and French cheeses from Sheridans. The concise food-friendly wine list runs to around two dozen, well-chosen bins split between the Old and New Worlds.
