Review on Wolfscastle Country Hotel, Allt yr Afon Restaurant
A sturdy stone-built house dating from the mid-1800s, Wolfscastle was once a vicarage but has been privately run as a country hotel for more than two decades. It's still known affectionately as 'Allt yr Afron' ('hill by the river') and makes the most of its tranquil country setting.
Guests can eat in the bar or the dining room from an evening menu that offers old-school dishes based around Welsh ingredients. The choice varies each day, but you can get an idea of the style from – say – Lllangloffan cheese and chive pâté with cherry and tomato salsa, roast rack of 'Cig Lodor' lamb on sautéed leeks with redcurrant and rosemary glaze, and pan-fried fillet of sea bass with Chinese leave and saffron sauce.
There are also assorted 'traditional dishes' along the lines of Llangwarren game sausages with bubble 'n' squeak, fisherman's pie, and honey-roast ham with mash and parsley sauce. Snacks and bar meals are the mainstays at lunchtime.
